Opština Prijepolje se nalazi u jugozapadnom delu Srbije na tromeđi Srbije, Bisne i Hercegovine i Crne Gore. Pripada Zlatiborskom okrugu i sa površinom od 827 km2, druga je opština po površini u okrugu.
Tačka sa najnižom nadmorskom visinom je mesto ušća reke Mileševke u Lim - 440 m nadmorske visine. Najviša tačka je vrh planine Jadovnik, Katunić - 1.734 m nadmorske visine.
Kroz Prijepolje prolaze važni magistralni putevi ka Crnoj Gori, M21 preko Bjelog Polja i M8 preko Pljevalja, kao i, železnička pruga Beograd - Bar.
Po popisu stanovništva iz 2002. godine opština Prijepolje imala je 41.188 stanovnika, što je činilo 13,14 % stanovništva Zlatiborskog okruga.
Po ovom popisu stanovništva, nacionalna struktura stanovništva je sledeća: Srbi - 56,8 %; Bošnjaci - Muslimani - 41,1 %, Ostali - 2,1%.
